A day in the house

Nobody looks at the clock here. The church bells tell the time.

A wooden table with a basket of peaches and oranges.

In the morning

Breakfast under the arches

Bread from the village oven, oil from the mill, fruit from the valley. Nobody clears the table in a hurry.

The Guadalest reservoir at sunset, with the ridge behind.

Mid-morning

The path starts at the door

On foot to the reservoir, up Aitana if your legs allow. We have measured the routes ourselves; they are waiting in the house.

The water spout falling into the pool over green tiles.

Coming back

Warm water

A pool for after the walk, not for laps. The water is at 27 °C: in January you still get in. And the sound of the spout, all day long.

The sun setting over a line of pines, the sky turning gold.

Late afternoon

The sun goes down behind the pines

Time to light the barbecue or the wood oven on the porch. Dinner is made in the courtyard, and it lasts in the courtyard.

Feet in socks in front of the lit fireplace.

At night

The fire is lit

Logs, warm socks and nothing to do. The village goes quiet and the house stays warm.

The house

A village house rebuilt with its own stone, beams and lime. You come in through a green door and end up in a courtyard with water.

The valley

Benimantell sits beneath Aitana. The sea lies behind the ridge.

From the roof terrace: the rooftops of Benimantell and the mountains beyond.
From the house's roof terrace

A village with a bakery, a bar and a church that strikes the hours. Paths lead from the door to the reservoir and the mountain; by car, Guadalest castle and, on the other side, Altea.

We don't organise activities. We know the place and we open the door.

The guides

Four guides. One for the house: how to get here, how to open up and who to call. And three for the valley: who makes the oil, wine, honey and cheese; where people really eat; which paths and pools begin at this door.

Why this house exists

For years we built cities. It went well.

And yet, every Sunday driving back from some village, we were left with the same feeling: we had successfully built a life that was not quite the one we wanted to live.

This house is the opposite. Paths, stone, cold water in August and a table nobody gets up from.

Jesús Boix · Nichola Chakravarty

“I want to stay here and live.”
